The easy solution is not to try to communicate emotions, but rather to let emotions communicate themselves. What I mean is that emotions are very real reflections of the human experience and using metaphors or tropes will probably position your work in the "uncanny valley" of trite Hallmark cards. Don't use an image as a surrogate for words, but keep the shutter-release half pressed in order to capture that exact moment where feelings are being expressed.
