Mar 15, 2011 at 17:37 comment added labnut As a compulsive mountain hiker I know that this is an important question :) Considering the weight of my backpack, the small weight differences you mention are not important. Bulk though, is important, but you know your needs best. But, most importantly, in the mountains it gets wet, so weather resistance is vital, which is why I carry a Pentax K-7. And in hot weather, as I have watched my sweat drip onto my camera, I have been also grateful for its weather resistance.

Mar 15, 2011 at 13:20 comment added mattdm Since the original question has been rephrased to be "pros/cons", and since weight/size is the major "pro", and since you don't have any good answers here yet :) I think this should now definitely be closed as duplicate.
Mar 15, 2011 at 13:00 comment added Reid @mattdm, I was thinking about more or less comparable kits in general. For example, the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 weighs 150g, the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 weighs 100g; the D90 714g, the Olympus E-P2 440 with viewfinder 410g; my Nikkor 70-300 D 505g, the Panasonic 520g 520g (and maybe there would be a better comparable for that pair - that's just the one I looked up). My question pretty much is: I've done the math, but what do people who've actually used both think?
Mar 15, 2011 at 12:47 comment added mattdm Since it got lost in the confusion, I'm gonna repeat myself. :) This is going to depend on what lenses you plan to carry. The Panasonic GH2 + 100-300mm lens weighs 912g; the APS-C Pentax K-r + 40mm pancake weighs 634g. (Of course, the GH2 + pancake is less.)
Mar 15, 2011 at 12:40 comment added Reid By the way, @jrista, @jerry, @thomasrutter - I am sorry to sow so much confusion and I do really appreciate the effort you put into answering the question you (legitimately) thought I was asking.

Mar 15, 2011 at 12:33 comment added Reid @thomas, no, because full-frame DSLRs are bigger than APS-C DSLRs and the latter is specifically what I'm interested in comparing with. Do you have an alternative tag? Sorry for the confusion.

Mar 15, 2011 at 4:36 comment added thomasrutter "APS-C" actually refers to a sensor size. Did you mean "DSLR" instead then? Consider the Sony NEX cameras which are mirrorless but use an APS-C sensor...

Mar 15, 2011 at 4:02 comment added Reid @mmr, yes, I'm referring to bulk, not sensor size. Thanks for catching that. I will clarify.

Mar 15, 2011 at 3:32 comment added thomasrutter There are two important clues: the "sensor-size" tag and the fact that "APS-C" specifically refers to the size of a sensor, not a format/mount/system.
Mar 15, 2011 at 3:01 comment added jrista @mmr has a point...I definitely read that as "sensor size difference". Didn't even think about camera size difference.
Mar 15, 2011 at 2:42 comment added mmr Am I right in assuming you mean the size difference of the gear itself? It seems that these initial answers assume you're talking about sensor size, not lugging-around weight.
Mar 15, 2011 at 2:06 comment added mattdm I think this is mostly a duplicate of the above-mentioned post. But maybe you could make it more specific? But not so specific as to be useless to others. :) What field of view do you normally shoot with on your long hikes?
