Metadata is additional data related to a photo, this is usually written by the camera into the image file at the time of shooting but can be edited later. This metadata includes information such as the time and date of shooting, equipment involved and settings used.

What tools exist to remove metadata from photos?
Another command-line tool that can do this is exiftool, using the option -all=. Here's an example:
