My previous related questions:

I have already decided that I'm not gonna be shooting in RAW, since it's too slow when you're bracketing, and a single exposure, even if RAW, has too little dynamic range for me.

I'm using two exposure bracketing apps with my Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) - Camera FV-5 and Open Camera. On this phone CFV5 can bracket in a -2ev...+2ev range only, because it uses exposure compensation for that. That's too little for me. OC can do -3ev...+ev because it doesn't use exposure compensation, that's enought dynamic range but OC is incredibly buggy to the point where it's unusable.

How do I check the bracketing range I can get with any given phone? Does it depend on the OS, on the sensor, or what?

    The HDR feature of Lightroom Mobile produces excellent results, but it is only compatible with a handful of phones. For Android, see the list of devices at the end of the description. – Szabolcs Jan 1 '18 at 15:02
  • @Szabolcs: Thanks. It seems it uses a single RAW exposure to tonemap, and that's not enough dynamic range for me. Quote: "... full raw HDR capture mode is currently supported on devices ...". – Stefan Monov Jan 1 '18 at 17:24

    I'm using a Samsung S7. How long it takes depends on the light levels (exposure time), but generally it is "quick" (< 1 s). It is designed for hand-held use. The S7's optical stabilization helps with this. The program is far from perfect, and doesn't always get it right. I often take 2 shots, just in case one of them doesn't turn out right. Lots of weird things can happen, such as one of the 3 exposures not being properly focused. But when it works, it produces really great results. – Szabolcs Jan 1 '18 at 18:22

    You should also know that in HDR mode you can't change capture settings—everything is automatic. You get the result as a flexible raw file though. (You can also choose to preserve the 3 original raw files separately.) While the results are excellent for a smartphone, it's not any better than a single frame taken with an APS-C camera (the dynamic range isn't better despite bracketing). Finally, processing can take quite a long time. The app will notify you when it's done, and the phone is can get quite slow while waiting. I don't know if it's better on iOS or on an S8. – Szabolcs Jan 1 '18 at 18:25

    Here's a sample photo I took recently: DNG. Please download it for your own use, as this link will stop working in a few days. This would have been impossible with the built-in camera app (the dynamic range is too high), but it wouldn't have posed a challenge for my ASP-C DSLR (which I didn't have with me!) Just so you know what to expect. I prefer using Lr mobile with scenes that have a more manageable dynamic range. I chose this sample so you see where its limits are. – Szabolcs Jan 1 '18 at 18:34

The bracketing range on phones depends on the camera app you use. As you've noted, different apps can have different bracketing ranges on the same phone. You'll have to try different apps to find one, if it exists, that is stable with the bracketing range you want.
