With a digital display, it looks like noise moving across the screen when previewing a photo in low-light conditions, much like UHF static on an old non-digital TV.

But even with a film camera, that same noise can appear after images are developed. And with digital, high-ISO and low light can also produce this same graininess.

What is the nature of the graininess? Are the two phenomena described above related?
