Jan 8, 2017 at 9:33 | comment | added | Tetsujin | @MichaelClark - ahh, my bad. I wasn't aware of the release date of the P. Mine is newer, a 5500 & came with the AF-P, all my other lenses are AF-S which have M/A-M so I wasn't aware you couldn't just grab the focus ring on the older ones. [I guess I'm still way down the bottom end of the learning curve, apologies.]

Jan 8, 2017 at 8:44 | comment | added | Michael C | Further, the AF-S 18-55mm kit lenses (all 4 variants) should NOT be manually focused with the A-M switch in the Autofocus position as it can damage the AF mechanism.
Jan 8, 2017 at 8:42 | comment | added | Michael C | The D3400 was the first to use the AF-P
Jan 8, 2017 at 8:41 | comment | added | Michael C | The AF-S is the kit lens supplied with the D3300 referenced by the OPer in his comment to the OP: bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1023353-REG/…

Jan 7, 2017 at 19:02 | comment | added | Tetsujin | The kit 18-55 actually has no switch - it's in permanent auto/manual, which is an annoying omission imho. You can override it by just twisting the focus ring after the camera had a go & failed - or at any time, the lens won't fight you, though bearing in mind the next half-press you'll have to do it again. Alternatively you can dig in the interface & disable AF altogether, for multiple shots.
