swapped dps link on how to hold a camera to B&H one that gives more thorough advice.
Oct 31, 2020 at 17:45 comment added inkista @Cullub, it's true for both. You can twist the rings to adjust zoom/focus in either direction with the forefinger and thumb of the left hand. You don't rest the weight of the lens on the hand where the rings are. The rings sort of "float free" if you pick the right spot for the lens to rest on your palm.
Oct 30, 2020 at 23:02 comment added Cullub For handholding technique (hand under lens instead of above it), is that true for Nikon and Cannon both? It makes sense to me for Cannon with the direction you twist the barrel to zoom, but seems backwards for Nikon.

typo fix.
Dec 12, 2019 at 18:52 comment added Peter - Reinstate Monica Funny how you emphatically say "the lens is not the problem" but a paragraph down recommend to avoid the largest aperture (which would not be the largest with a better lens). In low light lens quality is essential. (The wide-open advice as such, like the rest of the answer, is very good, of course.)
Aug 5, 2018 at 21:02 comment added inkista @JimMacKenzie, hence my writing "If it's an issue of misfocus, check the rest of the frame to see if anything else was in focus." in my answer:)
Aug 5, 2018 at 20:34 comment added Jim MacKenzie A good way of discerning between being out of focus and having camera shake as the problem is whether anything is in sharp focus. Most times, if focus is the issue, the plane of sharp focus will fall somewhere. If camera shake is the problem, everything will have some blur.

genericizing edit pass to make this less P&S/dSLR-centric and more applicable to mirrorless and smartphones as well.
