Mar 2, 2013 at 23:20 comment added user2719 @Phil - It would be -- it's just the transitions that'll kill you if you try this in practice unless you take a lot of images and make your strips very, very narrow—at least at the close end of the "wedge", where DoF is very narrow. You'd need to do a lot of blending to avoid the appearance of focus jumps.

The part I am still having trouble understanding is if the variance in depth of field across the image is appropriately modeled by a composite 'panorama' of thin strips of identically framed images taken at different focal distances.
