It's an area generally overlooked by people coming to DSLRs these days, as we've learned to be suspicious of flash, based on terrible results from built-in flashes. This leads to a whole "natural light is the only way for me" outlook, which isn't inherently bad, but is more limiting than new photographers realize. Exploring controlled/shaped light is an important part of photography. So, even though it's not an accessory per se, I'd add a good book on lighting to the list.
