Having multiple lenses is the way that goal is achieved, not the goal itself. In this case, the conditions the 18-55 (which OP is thinking of buying) is good for is practically just a subset of the conditions the 17-85 (which they already have) suits. There's no point in OP buying a second lens unless it actually allows them to do something the other isn't (at least almost) as good for.
