Which parameters to lock between images for a panorama? For the record I just found a similar related discussion (primarily in the comments) for this older question: photo.stackexchange.com/q/4874/9960 |

Which parameters to lock between images for a panorama? @Itai So what about in my example of a sunset, that appears full white on what is otherwise the optimal exposure for the rest of the panorama? It blanks out much of the shot, obviously making feature matching much more difficult than if that shot were "correctly" exposed. It just doesn't seem like "always lock everything" is a feasible as a steadfast rule. |

Which parameters to lock between images for a panorama? @Eric Here is one on auto-expose. You can see auto-exposure has significantly darkened the left of the image: matthewwild.co.uk/uploads/haybales.1.min.jpg - however much more exposure on that sky would leave it practically white (I have such a shot in another set where I attempted a more constant exposure, but it's not stitched yet) |

What does the 'macro' mode on my camera actually do? ...and the Sony Mavica! My first encounter with a digital camera. I still have the stack of floppy disks I used to feed it somewhere. Good times. |

What does the 'macro' mode on my camera actually do? Wow, little did I expect such a comprehensive answer! Thanks a lot. Upon review it seems that indeed, most of my pictures seem fine (thank goodness), just a couple are obviously out of focus. |

What uses does tone mapping have beyond HDR? Those are some great links, with interesting further reading too, thanks! I wonder... is it actually tone mapping that is responsible for the "cartoon" HDR effect, or is that caused by an additional step of trying to increase saturation? (or is that also part of 'tone mapping'?) |

HDR then Panorama, or Panorama then HDR? I think this is a very good point - normally HDR is used to get a good range across the vertical axis (e.g. land/sky). It's easy to imagine panoramas where the contrast is in the horizontal also/instead. Pre-stitching HDR would make it tricky to recover this contrast post-stitching. Also applying the same parameters to all images when generating the HDRs pre-stitch may still leave some images appearing unfairly exposed. |

Is there any reason to take 3 RAW/JPG images to get most from HDR? Took me a moment to ponder this answer for it to make sense, but it is certainly the most definite answer to the question, there is simply not enough stored information compared to multiple differently-exposed images. Following the same logic, this makes a correctly exposed image better than tweaking a RAW's exposure in post? |
