Conversion to DNG with compression is in Lightroom, after you've imported. You can import as RAW (NEF, CR2 or whatever camera you use), which is faster, or you can convert to DNG during import, which takes longer. After importing, select the files you want to convert to DNG Compressed and go to Library > Convert Photos to DNG.. and check the "Use lossy compression" checkbox.

comment Nikon D600: how to fix hundreds of photos with dust on them?
Not quite sure how @AJ Henderson's solution works, all I can say is how Lightroom does. The easiest thing would be to check out Adobe TV or YouTube and see tutorials on the spot removal tool, like this one. I've been using Lightroom for a while now (since v2) and it works flawlessly in may aspects, including spot removal. When removing spots in multiple photos based on the spots of one of the photos, what it does is it only gets the location of the spots and then analyses each photo independently to remove the spots at each location.

Today it happened again and looks like it has to do with the copying process. I cannot believe that Windows 7's COPY through Windows Explorer is faulty, but it sure looks that way... out of 195 photos, 5 were damaged. Copied those 5 again, two were ok, the other three still damaged. Then used a copy app called Tera Copy and everything worked well. So now I trust this app more than Windows' own copy. This only happens when copying from the SD card, though... weird, but at least now I know where the problem is.

Yes, I did format the SD card. There were many photos, only a few were like this.

Yes, that I know.. But files get renamed, which is why I wanted the filename as a tag. Do you know of a LR plugin or external tool that does this?

Thanks for the detailed instructions. From what I understand, though, after I create a VHD and copy the SD contents into it, it will be a regular file copy operation. What I'm looking for is a bit-by-bit copy from the SD.. is that possible?

SyncToy copies the files and what I'm looking for is a bit by bit, sector by sector copy process. I'm currently using something similar to it: a commercial program called GoodSync. Also, looks like SyncToy has been discontinued (although I'm sure it still works fine).
