comment How to build a digital reprography system on a budget?
It appears otherwise. As I reproduce artwork, it almost never comes on a truly plane surface. Especially with aquarels. The scanner has an almost horizontal angle of ilumination, creating all sorts of ugly side effects (visually raising pager grain, and shadows all over the place). To reduce these side effects one has to work much more with the resulting image to get something workable - in the process losing much more to the work's originality than by photographing it.

In the end, I bought a Nikon D3200 with a 40mm/f2.8 Micro Nikkor and had it annexed to a "reprography-gallow" fixed to my tilted drawing desk. I use two flurescent studio type lamps in a 45 degree angle an am having GREAT results - not to mention much less hassle then in scanner times. Now, I'd prefer a 5300 and a very good zoom lens, but I'll come to that :)

Thanks for this exhaustive response! I will follow your advise and make a few tests, but it seems, I will have to go for the scanner anyway...
