I've been a software developer for a lot longer than I'm willing to admit. My current interests are C++ and Python on Windows, but I've been known to dabble in Linux and I try to be language agnostic when I can.

comment What happened to Foveon sensors?
Early Sigma cameras used JPEG compression settings (subsampling) that didn't show their sensor to the best advantage, but they fixed this. I wish I could remember where I had seen a quite graphic demonstration of the problem.

comment How do I get a photo of the required 300dpi or for a 24x36" vinyl banner?
The resolution field is intended for devices which have an actual physical resolution, such as scanners. The EXIF 2.2 spec is at exif.org/Exif2-2.PDF, have a look at page 19 (which is page 25 of the PDF).

The value of 72 is actually mandated by the EXIF standard. Who lets you change it?

comment How do camera body motors compare to in-lens motors for focusing?
Can't agree with the assertion that an in-body motor means all lenses work at the same speed. Don't know if it's due to gearing or what, but some lenses are faster than others even within the same category.

comment What is the difference between the two Pentax 50-200mm DA lenses?
@mattdm, it's understandable that the factory would be stuck with old stock when a better version came out at the same price. I'd guess they're forced by contractual obligation to offer them at list price.

comment How is the YCbCr color space represented in a JPEG image?
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the subsampling causes the artifacts. It's just that the existing errors from quantization get blown up 2X, making them much more visible. I think it's important to know that the visible effect of subsampling is more than just a little added fuzziness.

Chroma-subsampling doesn't just result in "loss of resolution". It introduces very noticeable artifacts especially in the red channel.

@thomasrutter, Photoshop picks the subsampling based on the quality setting you choose. It's not an independent option.

comment Why has no one invented a 4:5 aspect ratio APS-C/35mm-sized DSLR?
@Matt, Canon is a special case because they make their own sensors and even the least popular ones sell in great volumes, just because they're Canon. The other sensor makers concentrate on the ones that are a sure thing.

+1 for Take lots of images and Experiment. That is surely the best way to make the most of your equipment.

Do you have a link to Pentax's claims that a Linear Polarizer is OK?
