comment What happens to a lens when you turn the focus ring during AF mode?
@MichaelClark your comment that all Canon lenses designated USM may be manually focussed at any time is incorrect (maybe you covered this with "As a general rule" ;) But there are two types of USM - Ring type USM and Micro USM. Ring type USM lenses may be manually focussed at any time. Micro USM lenses should not be - they still have a gear train which can be damaged if you turn the focus ring while it is engaged. Unfortunately Canon won't directly tell you what lenses use what type of USM so you'll have to look it up in the specs.

comment When should I turn off image stabilization?
@RafalZiolkowski - I had the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM for a couple of years and never had any issues with the IS on mine!!

comment What blogs should I be following if I am learning photography?
Honest answer: If you want to be a better photographer, don't follow blogs. Get out and take photos.

comment How can I check for damage to my lens from impact with a window?
This is nothing! I recently dropped my camera with the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM (A great big hunk of glass) out of a bus onto solid concrete!!! There is a slight dent on the bottom of the front of the lens where the hood fits on but otherwise somehow it is unscathed! AF drive, glass, everything! Don't ask me how.... ?! Images taken still look good :)

comment What apertures are required to enable autofocus, including cross-type or high-precision focusing, on Canon DSLR cameras?
This may all be in the manuals and the OP could have looked it up, but congratulations @DragonLord for bringing it all together in one place! A full and complete answer - probably way more than the OP expected, but definitely a comprehensive guide! I +1'd but if I could + more I would... :)

I think the D5100 does not have that range finder feature?! Not according to the manual I looked up for my answer anyway... ? My friend has had a D90 and D700 though -- both of which have this and it is immensely useful! (I wish Canon did it!)
