comment What is the best 3rd party cheap lens for shooting events with canon 600D?
I have shared my experience with the non-VC version of the Tamron on a similar question here

Its not right to disregard an entire brand based on your experience with one lens (which doesn't seem to be the model in question).

comment What features should one look for when selecting a flash?
I realized that as soon as I finished writing this post, since the question didn't really seem to be about off camera flash. But even with those requirements kept aside, I believe that the the YN 460 is a heck of a deal for a beginner before getting a 'pro-level' and much more expensive speedlight.

comment Are the Canon 15-85mm + 50mm f/1.8 adequate substitutes for the 17-55mm f/2.8?
This one is reliable and comes with an India warranty so you are safe. Surely the Canon has a marginal edge, but it costs thrice as much. You can get a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM with the remaining money if you have to spend it. :D

Agree with @cmason. f/2.8 makes a HUGE difference. Shoot indoors and you are already pushing your ISO to the max. This is where the two stops comes in handy. Plus it gives lovely bokeh.

@mattdm: Could you please suggest a rephrased title?

Thanks Steve. This is very useful. Do you have any experiences with the stabilization systems on both?

comment Will I see a significant improvement from upgrading from Canon EOS 350D to 550D?
In terms of making the best out of your L series glass, you can see this link on DxOMark that compares how your 70-200 lens performs on the different bodies.

comment In Lightroom, how can I move a set of filtered images preserving the folder order?
That's easy. After exporting, goto "Import from Catalog", point it to your new catalog and select "Add New Photos To Catalog Without Moving". This will consolidate everything in a single catalog while moving some photos to an external drive.

Please see the updated answer for a simpler solution that I found online.

Not so sure about your 60D argument. According to snapsort.com, "The 60D has a slight edge (0.3 f-stops) in low noise, high ISO performance" and even the 5D Mark II gives me just 1.5 stops over the 500D. I'm not talking about the maximum allowed ISO setting but rather the 'safe' ISO setting for low noise shots. 3-stop stabilization does seem to make more sense, no?

I find that with the Tamron, 1/50-1/100 is normally sufficient to photograph slow moving subjects. Also I'm restricted by the mediocre ISO performance of the Canon 500D, so anything beyond ISO 800 gets pretty noisy. Based on this, it looks like I definitely need IS to handhold in the 1/50-1/100 range with 70-200.

I frequent the site, but surprisingly, they don't have a review of the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 OS yet.

I'm based in India, so renting options are very limited. But I understand what you mean. I might be able to get my hands on the Canon, but I was looking for some accounts of people's experience with the Sigma, given similar technical specs and a $800 difference.

comment How to choose rechargeable batteries for my Nikon superzoom camera?
Nope. A higher mAh rating will mean longer lasting batteries and more shots per charge. 2500 mAh will work just fine. (Also the measure of battery capacity is mAh - milliampere-hour; MHz is megahertz - a measure of frequency)

comment What solution should I use for cataloging photos for private sharing?
It also has some sweet face detection built in. Great if your photos feature people in it.
