Why doesn't Canon 18-200 mm lens show any visible difference from 170 to 200 mm? You are absolutely right, the fact that I wasn't using it outside was the problem. When I focus to infinity, there definitely is a noticeable difference but when inside (thus focusing too close), the difference isn't noticeable right away but there is some change, which I confirmed with Photoshop (it's around 3 to 4%). But I still don't understand why it seemed to be "zoomed more" with a 70-200 mm lens, I'll have to check that again. Well, thanks for your help, I'm used to prime lenses so I got confused when using a lens without the need to move physically. :D |

Why doesn't Canon 18-200 mm lens show any visible difference from 170 to 200 mm? Well, I did try it. I'll go tomorrow again to check it with a tripod. BTW, I don't have a full frame camera but I don't think that matters, 200 mm focal length should be the same on any lens if sensor size doesn't change. |

Why doesn't Canon 18-200 mm lens show any visible difference from 170 to 200 mm? Very slight change near 170 and after that I don't see any change or am not observant enough. Perhaps I'll use difference blending mode in Photoshop to compare the photos. Regarding the graph - yeah, basic physics, I guess... What a dope...
But how would you then explain the fact that a 70-200 mm lens has a lot smaller (meaning, more zoomed) framed area when used at 200 mm than my lens at 200 mm. I tried the 70-200 mm lens at a camera store just to see the difference between them, though, but it is still quite observable. Why wasn't this lens just named 18-170 mm? |

How can I use a zoom lens easily with a rain cover? @dpollitt - I don't think that other (more expensive) covers deal with zoom lenses better. If you think they do, please tell me how they achieve good zoom control. |

How can I use a zoom lens easily with a rain cover? I don't need it to last that long. I only need it for photographing Holi festival on my trip to India and I need protection from water and dust. |

How can I use a zoom lens easily with a rain cover? It is nicer but there's still no adequate access to zoom ring. Besides, the cover is way too big for the lens I mentioned. Thanks for the idea though... |

Why can't digital camera sensors expose each photosite individually? Thank you for the in-depth answer. It's quite interesting that I see everything that I overlooked when I suggested this idea, glad that you pointed it out. Selective area mapping would be the best approach but you are right, who would make the decisions? Surely if the camera did them itself, it would obviously be intended for the masses but having to map the scene on your own would be useless since it is obviously easier to do it with a professional software on the big screen and not with the camera (with some quality loss, that would, I believe, be insignificant). Cheers! |

Why can't digital camera sensors expose each photosite individually? You are correct, it would result in a bland photo but obviously it would have to have some limitations. I believe that letting camera decide on which areas should be brighter and darker would be too much. I wasn't thinking right... |

Why can't digital camera sensors expose each photosite individually? If you do find it, please link to the article. An interesting idea indeed. |
