Should I invest in a high-end body or better lenses? agreed, but he specifically mentioned he was considering pentax or canon, and so I didn't want to complicate the discussion... |

long range canon lenses an alternative is the 300 F4 with a 1.4x. I use that combo. An advantage over the 400 F5.6 is that you get both focal lengths, AND you get IS. WhenI'm shooting handheld, I use the 100-400. when I'm shoting on a tripod, I tend to use the 300 + 1.4x.and you're right, the prime is sharper, but less flexible. |

long range canon lenses The 100-400 is a good lens for this situation. I use it for about 90% of my wildlife shots. |

What is a good camera for an aspiring young photographer? you sound like you're critiquing the G12 without actually using or studying it. I've talked with many professional photographers who'd disagree with you; the lens isn't mediocre, the sensor isn't crippled... George Lepp uses that line of cameras for many of his gigapixel panos, for instance. Many pros are turning out publishable images on it. The compact cameras can be cost effective and have the advantage of, well, compactness, meaning it's easier to carry them around conveniently. Not a bad idea if you're just starting out. |

What size lens is recommended for flying bird photography? One other thing to keep in mind in all of this -- a modern camera body like the 7D gives you the ability to shoot at a higher ISO with acceptable noise, and also has a high pixel density, which means you can crop the image while maintaining good resolution. That means that spending money on a slower lens and a 7D is a good tradeoff to trying to guy huge, fast glass. There are many ways to get the shot these days |

What size lens is recommended for flying bird photography? agreed on not trying the teleconverters on the 100-400. Canon doesn't qualify them iwth that lens, and my experience is the results are rarely good. |

What size lens is recommended for flying bird photography? I'd strongly recommend renting the sigma first; I've heard too many photogs say it gets too soft at 500mm to be really useable for them. |
