comment How to get sand out of the sensor?
I clean my own sensors, both dry with air and wet. If I did this with me sensor, I'd send it for professional cleaning. If you mess it up, you have a really expensive repair bill or a doorstop. I wouldn't take the risk with my camrea, I'd send it to the pro.

comment What are some options for a low-cost, general purpose, travel lens for Canon?
hey, to help your research, I pulled some 100% crops of similar images from both my Rebel XT and my SX50. You can take a look and get a sense of the relative quality of the two units. chuqui.com/2013/07/…

(continued...) On the other hand, I've removed almost all of my Rebel XT images from my public web pages, because the image quality rather sucks compared to even my iPhone. Some of that is because of the photographer, but most of that is the old sensor and kit lens it had. But you clearly don't like this option, so I'm going to stop pushing it. Do what you think best, I've suggested as hard as I feel I should... (but I'd sell that Rebel... seriously)

The SZ50 is a 12megapixel camera that's 4x3x4 and ways 550 grams. The Rebel XT is 4x4x2 and 485 grams for 8 megapixels. That size and weight is body only (all data from the Canon site). Once you put a lens on it (at least, anything other than the 40mm pancake) it'll be noticably bigger and heavier again. You'll have to make your own decision on the quality of the lens, but my evaluation is that the image quality is quite good, way beyond what I'd expect for a $400 lens. Or I wouldn't use it.

FWIW, as a general rule I tell people I advise on hardware purchases to not think about resale or investment value unless they're buying a "keeper" lens -- the kind of lens you'll own for 10-20 years. And a $350 lens is almost never a keeper lens. Canon L glass is keeper lenses... With the speed of technology in photography, buy for now and worry about later later.

do some research. You can look up images on a site like flickr by camera model, and find images taken by a camera you're considering (like the SX50), and compare them to your rebel. I cut my digital teeth with a Rebel XT. Now I shoot mostly with a 7D, and I'm starting to use the SX50 more. I think it holds up well. I think it's much better than the Rebel XT. But you'll need to do your own research...
