comment Buying high-quality papers for use with large format fine art ink jet printers?
every reasonably size metro area probably has a camera shop that caters to the local pros, but they're rarely chains, so you have to find them. That'd be your best shot for finding a supply like that. It might take some exploring; I'd say the easiest way to get a list of candidates is to look for the shops that sell medium format gear. They'd be likely ones to also carry the higher end papers and other pro-oriented products. If not, they'll likely know who does...

comment What's the best number of shots to combine to produce an HDR photo?
Nik software has just announced their HDR product, HDR Efex Pro, to ship later this fall. I love their tools (viveza, silver efex pro), and at first glance, this seems to be another potentially great product: niksoftware.com/hdrefexpro/usa/entry.php

comment Which lenses are best for macro and for birdwatching (both Canon and Nikon)?
When you're deciding on a macro lens, whether you go 50mm or 100mm or 180mm depends a lot on waht you're planning to shoot, so consider your subjects. I chose the 180 because I expect to work primarily in the field and with subjects that aren't necessarily cooperative (dragonflies, etc) or where being extremely close to a subject is inconvenient (muddy fields); it gives me more flexibility. But if you're shooting primarily flowers or doing studio work, there are advantages to the 50 or 100mm macros. there are tradeoffs in all of these decisions, so knowing what you expect to do is important.

yeah, that's a nice area. I've been spending a chunk of time around Morro Bay and really love the area. I wrote up the Pismo part of my trip, which is here: chuqui.com/2010/08/road-trip-california-central-coast (with lots more photos!)
