Trying to learn more about photography

comment If I have a 18-55mm lens, is there a point in buying a 35mm prime lens?
You said the difference in indoor photography can be "huge". My questin is, I just bought Nikon D5100 and I am really impressed with the indoor images. They are really super. Can I expect even better quality that that as you said "huge". I though the sole purpose of this lens would be faster action, slightly better picture and faded background. Please explain.

comment Technically, why is the out of focus area blurred more when using a bigger aperture?
The figure is actually wrong. 1. Green Dot, blue and Red are shown at the same distance from the lens. In fact the center dot (green) should be ahead of the two. 2. Point 1,2,3 are wrong. They should have used only point 2 and use rays from all three objects, how they converge at point 2 or how point 2 sees them.

comment Could you recommend an under-$30 tripod for a DSLR?
@mattdm, that is a great link. I got further help from youtube videos and decided on one for under $40. Yes I am interested in landscape and astrophotography but well $40 wont hurt as starter :)

I ordered the first option above for $35. It has a review on youtube that confirmed to me it is stable and it can support 17 lbs of gear. Agree not quick to setup, has legs with screws rather than clips but I think it might work. It includes one free tripod as well :)

I mean there is a lot available on amazon in this price range. If i it is a bit higher, I can go for it. Basically looking for a fit for my DSLR.

Great Answer. I actually bought D5100 and am on my second day. So far I loved the pics and is pretty much outstanding. I would say there is no comparison with P&S with this camera, NOT AT ALL. Or may be I am still caught by my new camera, but I am an unbiased person. Carrying around is not a problem for me, it is not heavy, what I thought it would be. I'll even take it with me on hiking. The low light is where it beats other by miles but general pictures are crisp and feel of the pics is bombastic.

@Itai, that helps since I am not going to be very picky with manual settings, would rather like most of the stuff with auto setting. I do would like quick and easy changing of setting and I think D5100 is responsive enough (acceptable).

I agree there has to be some compromise with any camera. In this case may be not the best of the feel in hands and a bit heavy for my needs but otherwise good enough (D5100).

I would like to add, I am not talking about professional type photographs (of course lense would matter in that case). Just need good quality photographs that can be a good memory and some advance features like photos in low light etc + I would rather not carry a heavy camera but a lighter one.
