comment Where can I rent a camera and lens online within the US?
I have used BorrowLenses and LensRentals; both are excellent. One time FedEx failed to deliver my rental on time, and LR shipped another 1 overnight so I could have it on time (and they extended my rental period for 2 days for free). Excellent service

comment Is this amount of noise expected, or am I doing it wrong?
the gain to obtain the 1/3 stops in between is applied in software by the processor Im curious as to where you learned that. I believe you, but never heard it before

Hard to explain, but the noise stands out more in lightroom. Maybe like 1px bigger if that makes sense.

After uploading the image, it doesn't look as bad here as it does in Lightroom. Maybe compression was done somewhere?

comment Is an aperture range of 3.5-5.6 shallow enough to provide great bokeh on a cropped sensor?
I like how you differentiate on what is enough for group settings, I never really heard/though of that

comment is it normal to get significant lens flare with a 50mm f/1.8 Canon prime lens?
I own that same lens, and I don't have a problem with lens flare. I agree with @PaulCezanne, The majority looks like over-exposed light, but I'm not sure about the green tinted one at the bottom...
