I believe digikam does indeed use a database, but that it can store metadata (e.g. tags) in images and/or in XML files within the directories that your images reside, too.

I hadn't seen the 31mm f/1.8 - nice! I'm guessing she'll prefer to have the Macro of the 35mm f/2.8, but I'll definitely flag this up for her, too. Thanks.
