Hm, that would explain some of the confusion, still, I'm truly amazed on how much detail/stars he (and Mr Lowe) can squeeze out from a relatively short exposure. I suppose you need to be in the middle of the desert to get away from even the smallest amount of light pollution?

True, that is probably one way. Even so, let's focus on the "525 separate exposures" part and/or creating the effect from scratch.

@dpollitt. I've done some work with Photomatix, mostly just "pushing buttons" to get a low key HDR image. However, I have never found a setting that would create anything near these examples.

@Matt. What exactly do you mean by processing the sky and foreground separately? Separate HDR images? Manual photoshop work by masking?
