About Me Amateur photographer looking to expand my knowledge. I started shooting with film and played about with manual SLR for many years. Switched to P&S digital for a while then graduated to DSLR. Over the years I've tried my hand at abstract macros and a few other memes. Recently joined a Meetup group of photogs to learn studio lighting.

comment For a novice to flash, what color correction gels would be best to experiment with?
I skipped the Honl brand strap and just put velcro on my flashes. The rest of the light modifiers I make out of foam paper and attach with velcro as well.

I use this kit as well and find that the choices of colors are just right for what I need. I also like the roll-up gel holders that allow me to keep them readily available.

comment Can I use mic which requires phantom alimentation with a Canon 550D?
I believe they mean microphones that require phantom power - usually at 48V. As far as I can see on the specs for this camera, it does not support phantom power. Now, if your microphones have a battery in them already, then you're good to go.

comment How to shop for a lens filter?
Seconding lenstip. Still a great resource to show the variety and present a wide range with even measurement.

I like your clear construction details on the use of DIY materials for light control.

comment What lighting gear to get after my speedlight?
I picked up this shoe mount adapter to hold my flash and umbrella: bhphotovideo.com/c/… The advantage that this has over others is that it has some "teeth" in the swivel so that it can hold a heavy-ish weight with no slipping. The shoe is nice in that there is no stop so it's easy to put the flash on no matter the orientation. For studio flash, you'll want to find something that has the right mount for your unit. Still, look for something with the gripping teeth on the swivel.

comment Does adding additional strobes cumulatively add to the flash power?
Good point about adding the recharge information. I'd forgotten this value over a single powerful flash that has a slow recharge vs two or more with faster recharge.
