comment Why Isn't This Photograph Pin Sharp?
@I don't have this particular lens, my wide angle landscape lens does not have IS. From what I hear, it is a good practice to turn off IS when using a tripod although modern lenses should be able to detect that the lens is not in motion. Personally, I only use IS with my other lenses when shooting hand-held. Try another shot without IS and manually focus at full magnification to ensure maximum sharpness. Those tree trunks should be razor sharp at f7.

where is the focus point in that photo? Looks like you focused on the ferns about 1/4 up from the bottom edge. The photo is not NOT sharp enough but is it possible you didn't focus correctly? For this type of landscape on a tripod (which you did) , AF and stabilization should be off, you should magnify 10x and micro-adjust focus manually and exactly where you need it to be. Also, lots of grass and leafs here, nothing solid in the foreground to focus on other than grass - these will move even if it doesn't feel windy but the tree trunks are not sharp enough.

comment GoPro 4 Night Timelapse
Lowest aperture possible and ISO 2500 or more? Even then I doubt you will be able to do this with a GoPro. Even using a DSLR you need a fast (usually expensive) lens. Most astrophotography is also heavily post processed to bring out the stars. The time laps of moving stars that bounce around youtube and facebook are most likely taken with top quality Pro gear. GoPro just can't compete with that amount of glass and light gathering.

comment Which camera to buy - Canon EOS 6D or Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Completely agree! I have the 6D as well as a 60D APS-C and the 6D blows my older camera completely out of the water. The 6D is so great in low light and noise control there is no reason for me to ever use the older 60D other than backup. I was out last night and I put the Canon 50m f1.4 on the 6D to take a few portrait-orientation shots of the milky way (rather than the usual 17-40mm f4 I typically use for this) and I actually had to stop down to f2.8 and ISO 800 because i was getting in too much light at f1.4 f1.6 @ 25 second exposures and ISO higher than 800.

comment Hour long exposure of the sun
Why don't you try image stacking with shorter exposures, a process used to photograph star trails. A regular ND filter and a short exposure time may be enough then post process in software such as ImageStacker. I never tried it so I can't really provide this as a valid alternative answer.

comment Is there a 'top notch' photo lab with flexible options in Canada?
@AJHenderson - I print on the 8300 for my own use and it's good but not good enough for sale IMHO. I only want to offer the best possible print quality and the Hahnemühle paper prints I've been getting from my current service are just absolutely jaw-dropping awesome. I've been printing on plotters for a few years and when exposed to direct sun (my own testing on 2 HP and the Canon 8300) some prints fair better than others with the Canon IPF 8300 on a photo paper being the best but still showing significant deterioration after 2 years on the wall.

Sounds good and lots of options but holy expensive: 77.00 for a 16x20 print on a HAHNEMUHLE FINE ART paper. Posterjack offers 16x24 on the same paper for 24.99. I think I will just keep ordering from posterjack and alter the size of my custom mats instead.
