Photographer, tech head, and extreme sport enthusiast.

I'm an amateur who likes to shoot everything from portraits to landscapes. My favorite venues are half way up a 14k mountain, Ontario in Fall, and the Mediterranean at sunset.

I love talking technology, new equipment, and Canon lenses.

comment PS Elements vs Lightroom for image management
I'm not exactly clear what you want to keep from the Elements DB and move to LR that won't be in metadata? They are very different tools in that Elements is a destructive editor and LR is non-destructive. The LR DB tools are very powerful and I would be surprised to find out that much if any benefit exists to keeping the DB in Elements beyond the facial recognition feature. I also don't see what would be daunting about starting LR up and creating a new DB to point at the 40k images. Please explain further, and if you haven't download a trial and test out some of these theories and report back.

comment What software can show my most frequently used focal length?
The comment under the question notes "Windows 7".

comment What type of camera do I need to take reasonable photos across a swimming pool?
What is "reasonable"? A cell phone can do this.

comment How can I improve a landscape photo with deep shadows in post-production?
User13653 - This isn't a critique forum. The original question was specific and directed at a single issue. Your edit is asking for an overall critique which is not on topic here. If you have a solution that you have found I would recommend answering your own question vs adding in an "answer" to the question itself.

comment How many EV will a softbox knock down off your flash?
It depends on the softbox. Run a simple test in studio and you should have an answer.

comment How can I recreate the Instagram Filter “Slumber”?
This is exactly the type of "how do I create this effect" question that I wish we had more of. You actually named the filter you want to go after, provided an example using it, your original, and your attempt! Have an upvote from me, and welcome to the site!

Olin, it's not that I disagree with your sentiment - but it came off to me as rude. Keep in mind that posting of any images here is opening up to Creative Commons, something not everyone is comfortable with. Also, this site could use more photography so let's please not discourage it when users actually post it. Since I found your comment rude I've flagged it as such.

comment Pros and cons of cheap studio strobes vs. hotshoe/speedlight flash for portraits?
Great answer and lots of details! You clearly know what you are talking about, so thank you for sharing! I've only ever owned speedlights but I have yet to really run into the cycle time issues you described, at least for the shoots I have. I could see it for higher volume shops but I've had no problems with a few hundred shots of my kid in one session.

comment Can I swap cheap ink into my printer for documents and expensive ink in for photo prints?
Yup, I highly recommend the purchase of a B&W laser for students. Well worth it even if you use low priced ink in an inkjet.

comment Should I worry about a camera I am interested in “winning” on Snapsort?
If you are hesitant to buy Nikon because a previous Nikon model was a lemon for you, do you expect that snapsort will advise you based on reliability? Seems like your mostly concerned with durability and or reliability vs feature set or image quality.

I would try different off brand ink first. I buy stuff from China and it works great in a similar Canon all in one.

comment What lens for catalog-quality photos of long guns?
While this is a good answer, it would be better if you expanded on the lens selected and why. In particular because that seems to be the focus of the original question.

comment Are the Yongnuo clones of canon flash equipment and lenses legal to sell/buy?
@Hugo - You can't remove it, now that is has answers it either will stick around as is or be closed as off topic. I wouldn't worry about it too much, you have good answers already and not many votes to close. The community will decide the fate :) We do have some other legal questions on the site and some discussion of them over at meta already.

Great answer again Matt! We need more lighting equipment questions here. I like this one.

This question is about the legality of such items and this is not a legal advice site.

comment what is the virtue of lightroom's print module?
You can do basically everything that Photoshop can do in Photoshop Lightroom. But yes, you can do it in batches or in higher volumes with much more ease and speed.
