Software architect and developer, currently Director of Architecture at a Canadian software company in Toronto. I use a variety of technologies but at work it's generally C++, HTML, ASP (JScript), Flex, and SVG. For personal stuff, I tend to use PHP, C#, perl, and everything I use at work. :)

I've been designing and developing for well over a decade in the enterprise software market, first with IP billing, now with ticketing (no, not TicketMaster). I'm a classic case of a jack-of-all-trades, but my intuition is good and I pick up programming languages like a sponge picks up water.

I'm a moderator on Photography.SE and I'm an avid amateur photographer and especially enjoy nature and macro photography. I've also started getting into more studio oriented stuff, acquiring some lighting, background stands, and other gadgets for that purpose. My current weapon of choice is the Nikon D800. Check out my website for some of my photography DIY projects, some of which have been featured on the well-known DIY Photography site.

I'm now on 500px and you can see my portfolio that is in dire need of growth...

I'm also a moderator pro-tem on Pets.SE because I have a keen love and interest in animals. Over the years, I've had as companions dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, turtles, and budgies. As a result, I've learned a lot about caring and enjoying, sometimes the hard and sad way.

comment How do I create emphasis with a single color in a B&W image?
As an aside, folks, he didn't ask what the effect was, he asked how to get it. The originally selected "duplicate" question didn't answer that.

There are additional descriptions of how to do this for other photo editing tools, just click on the selective_color tag to find them.

comment The bottom 3/4 of my images are black--is it a shutter issue?
Some settings and shooting conditions too, are you using a flash? What shutter speed, etc. Or is it always?

comment Does a photographer take pictures or make pictures?
The term "making a photo" isn't new, Ansel Adams coined the term decades ago and even had a book in 1935 called "Making a Photograph" that was widely distributed. Rather than assuming elitism is behind it, you might consider that it's trying to tell you something about how to think about the subject that you're photographing.

comment Too much noise in video
George, welcome to the site. I don't want to discourage you, but I strongly recommend reading the topics in the help center to get a sense of what is a good question here so that we can provide advice and help.

comment Nikon D600 Tips and Tricks?
Hi Jay, I don't want to discourage you, but I think it's worth spending the time looking at the help center topics. A lot of your questions are discussion oriented and the site is not designed to be that way. With a bit more reputation, you'll be able to use the chat features and have discussions in that environment.

comment What would you think of a half-blurred video?
I'm afraid that the two strikes on this question is that it's about video (there is an SE site for this) and that it's very discussion oriented. That is really not well suited to a site aimed at Q&A. With a little bit more reputation, you'll be able to use the chat features on the site where something like this is more suitable.

comment What is a “pseudo mannequin”?
Hard to tell, but in the sample shot there appears to be a wire frame across the back. Perhaps it's a wireframe mannequin, but not being sure, I can't really supply it as an answer. I don't think I've ever heard that term before...

comment What is the difference between levels, curves and contrast settings in post processing?
@chuqui - I have to admit that I'm failing to see the duplication.

comment Can anyone identify the silver rangefinder-style camera in this advertisement?
Nicely found, I was beginning to think it was a fake prop.

comment How can I recreate the Instagram Filter “Slumber”?
I think the Instagram filter is adding a slight haze to the image, creating a softness to the look. Reminds be a bit of the glamor glow in Nik's Color Efex.

comment EyeFi doesn't support CF cards. Are there any alternatives that do?
@mattdm - I've updated to the latest information. Looks like it's now coming to a CF card near you... :)

comment Is the build-quality of the Canon 60D as good as the 40D?
@Stuart - as mentioned by Matt: What you need to do is merge your accounts - the guest one and your new one. To do that, go here: photo.stackexchange.com/help/merging-accounts

comment Pros and cons of cheap studio strobes vs. hotshoe/speedlight flash for portraits?
Modeling light is handy for shadow and highlight determination visually, but it's not make or break there because the intensity levels are not always high enough to get a really good sense of how sharp or diffuse those shadows will be depending on ambient light.

Are the file sizes of the rejected images much larger than the ones that succeeded?

There's a site dedicated to this purpose now. :)

comment Should my collection of older Pentax lenses be a deciding factor in my first DSLR purchase?
Not sure where you heard that Pentax cameras aren't too great, comparatively, but I might suggest that you ignore their advice in the future because it's almost a polar opposite at the same price point. The list of cameras you have there are quite old, current Pentax cameras are amongst the best going.

comment Do photographers see ambiguity in the color of the blue/black (gold/white) dress?
Sorry Matt, protected this to avoid the flood off the Internet treating the site as a discussion forum.

comment What should I consider when using DSLRs in cold weather?
@Robin - I suggest looking at the posting date... However, rating is service recommendation by the manufacturer. Check your manual.
