comment Cons of using a manual flash on-camera as well?
I have a Metz 58AF-1. While it's powerful and has many features, it still makes you muck around with the flash too much - its user interface is menu-driven with four soft buttons, so to adjust anything you have to watch the small LCD and use multiple key-presses in correct order. So it might be not the best choice if you really want to "focus on what you're shooting" - get something with dedicated buttons for its settings.

comment What are common beginner mistakes in photography?
@Stainsor a sheet of paper held in front of the flash would both weaken and soften the light. If you don't have the paper (or time to use it), this is an example of situation where you can't get closer (for technical reasons). Also, if you know what "fill light" means and when you should use it, there's a good chance you're not be a beginner any more :)

comment How to correct photos which were overexposed at the edges only?
Assuming lighting of background stays the same, changing background-to-camera distance won't make it darker - larger distance means smaller magnification, i.e. light for a pixel is gathered from larger area, and this exactly compensates the change in distance. Otherwise objects far away would always seem dark.
