Obviously there is no purpose to it but all my questions still stand. Is this expected and why? Google doesn't seem to have easy to find information about this so it's a perfect piece of information to add to PhotoSE

I am not recommending you do this, just trying to give some tips to help make it safer.

I haven't watched the video or anything but take both batteries out of your camera if you're going to do this. my.safaribooksonline.com/book/photography/30000lti00235/… In theory, as long as there is no current flowing, you should be safe to do this. I've done it with other electronics, you just need to make sure there is no current and give it plenty of time to fully dry.

As far as I know this technique only works on plastic surfaces

comment What is lomography?
@dpollitt "Sure you could take a great photo with it, and there have been (and continue to be) serious photographers work with it, but along with this there were also a lot of what amounted to unskilled photographers taking boring photos with cheesy effects." gives Instagram the justice it deserves. Lots of good photos/photographers but a lot more "I'm a photographer because I took a picture of my [feet/food/cleavage] and added a Valencia filter." Doesn't downplay the app as much as the people who use it.
