comment What options are there for good, cheap online backup of photos?
For uploading, Amazon offers a service where you mail them a drive and they load it into S3. It's described here: aws.amazon.com/importexport

There's quite a difference in reliability between a good online service like S3 and an external drive in a friends house.

comment Can I use a flatbed scanner to scan a photo into RAW format?
"It's really a TIFF file that is saved with minimal changes from the raw sensor data" - oddly enough, that's the same as (almost all) camera raw files - TIFF is actually a pretty crazy format that allows you to throw arbitray things into the file, so most "raw" (.nef, .cr2, etc.) are actually based on TIFF. Because the Camera uses a bayer filtered sensor, and camera manufacturers like to make things harder for others to access as a way to sell their own software, it's not as easy to open a raw file as a normal tiff.

comment What's a Good All Purpose Compact Lens for a dSLR …?
I think the 50/1.8 is a very attractive lens at the price. Manual focus takes some getting used to, but it's really not that hard at 1.8. You still have the aids like the green dot in the viewfinder for confirming focus.

I believe the V500 comes with medium format film holders as well, perhaps those might hold it?

comment Has anyone used Alien Skin Bokeh?
it does a better job of aping the look of a real lens. The tool actually has a number of presets for specific lenses (known for their good bokeh), and then lets you tweak. You can simulare a variety of effects like number of aperture blades, etc. as well.

Dreamhost also offers unlimited storage for "web content" on your plan. I have a simple (password protected) web gallery using zen photo which lets you browse through the folders of photos. Lets me have all the photos as web content, so they aren't limited in space.
