comment How do I “focus and recompose” using spot metering?
This is a great tip, but a difficult habit to form! Still working on it...

@Matt Grum Thanks for the input, my obvious bad. I'm just trying to salvage a workable answer for this long-standing question.

@Dennis you might want to consider a prime then. See my updated answer.

comment What are the advantages of a lens having a fixed maximum aperture?
@dpollit I used that example because the constant max. aperature fell in the middle of the variable max. aperture range, and because the two lenses are of comparable quality. Can you suggest two lenses with the same range of focal lengths to compare? The best I could come up with is the Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM and Canon EF 100-300mm f/5.6 L in which case the more expensive fixed maximum aperture lens has a higher aperature and than the variable max. aperture lens.

comment What are the symbolic meanings of the position of hands in images?
Just to clarify, are you interested in contemporary meanings in contemporary cultures, or in Medieval Art?

Thanks for clearing that up with an example :)

comment When travelling, how do I decide what's interesting enough to be photographed
+1 I think the copying technique makes this approachable.

Let me know if this is unclear by the way. I probably lack the terminology to ask this question correctly.

Great answer Imre, perhaps put edit that comment into your answer for clarity.

comment Is there any significant difference between Nikon and Canon?
For completeness, the Magic Lantern firmware which adds mostly video related features is targetted at Canon DSLRs.

comment Is there any significant difference between Nikon and Canon?
This doesn't apply to DSLRs as specified in the question.

The brightness, although I guess the sparks would cause some damage if you were unfortunate enough to cop one in the eye.

Can you reformulate this into a question? What exactly would you like to compare between the two lenses?

+1 Thanks very much for the suggestions. You say that "Exposing the arc to the sensor for long can damage the sensor". Can you quantify what you mean by long?
