Advice on storing and organizing exported files alongside RAW files Agreed. The LR folder structure keeps the masters and is the primary backup. However, I also export to another folder structure and import into Elements which is my primary 'archive' for tagging, etc. This gets backed up too, but not everywhere and not always because I can always re-export. |

Is the Canon 40mm safe to store when extended? I misspoke about focus by wire. This was just the first lens I have that physically extends when focusing. I never notice on the others and was conflating the zoom ring and the focus ring. |

Lightroom white balance adjustment without a grey card Sometimes you only need a few pixels of 'grey' to get a good result with the eyedropper. I've had good luck on a few people shots clicking on a shadowed part of a shirt pattern that I know is white. |

Will the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 give better auto-focus results than the 50mm f/1.8? Two other considerations: 1) light low enough to require F1.8 is probably also getting close to the limits of the AF system in gneral - one option is to use the AF assist (red light) on an external flash. If you disable the flash but leave it powered, you can still use it for AF assist. May still be too annoying for portrait work though. 2) I've had better luck on my 40D with the 30mm-f/1.4 and selecting a specific AF point rather than letting the AF system guess at which of the 9 it should pick. Doing this on a 550 may be more difficult since it doesn't have all the extra control dials. |

What kind of containers are effective for ~20 year storage? You may have good luck finding archival quality boxes, etc at a library supply company. Looks like Gaylord makes up to 16x20 inch sizes along with standard sizes. They also make customized sizes but not sure on the cost. See gaylord.com/adblock.asp?abid=2235 |

What are some camera-phones with decent shutter-release response (or workarounds)? I wonder if the instant release means it's just running in movie mode, thus giving you only 1/30s shutter speeds? |

What's a good strategy for choosing which photos to keep? The wife filter works for me too since she doesn't care about exposure or out of focus if the shot is a good picture of her or the kid is actually smiling at the camera. |

Can I leave the batteries in my camera? If it's just sitting in the house, I even leave the camera 'on' and let it go into standby on a timer. One less step since it wakes up as soon as I hit the shutter button. Been doing this for almost 3 years rotating between 2 batteries and haven't noticed any battery life issues. |

Should auto-focus need adjusting? A ruler works, but if you want to be fancy, you can use this regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart |

Should auto-focus need adjusting? I have heard that sometimes sending in a lens / camera pair will optimize for that combination, but cause new or worse problems with other lenses. Anyone else experience this? Maybe this deserves another question? |
