It's not always about hand-holding, right? (But I think we get your point). Check out my answer to this question on aerial photography :-): photo.stackexchange.com/questions/670/…

@JamWheel - I suppose the rest of the article goes on to talk about more specifically when it is and isn't needed. Shutter speed, surrounding environment, and the subject all factor into this decision.

comment Can you recommend a small camera bag to fit medium SLR, superzoom lens, and small flash?
@Jon Erickson: I have seen it in stores... I actually tried it out in a store and then ordered it online later.

You should probably give credit to @ysap for that photo and link to his answer directly. photo.stackexchange.com/questions/7784/…

You mean, 3^2, not 2^3? so 9 x less light?

comment Should I switch off image stabilization when photographing my 2 year old?
I talk about image stabilization in this answer: photo.stackexchange.com/questions/670/…. There is a good article all about VR (vibration reduction -- it's what Nikon calls canon's IS). Point number 4 in the article is "If your subject is moving, you still need a shutter speed that will stop that movement."

comment How to get started with fashion photography?
For example. "I know a lot about landscape and flower photography. I'm looking to branch out and try something new like Fashion photography. How does it differ from the type of photography I am used to and what are some things I can do to learn to become a better fashion photographer."... or something to that effect.

@ysap - just to be clear, I was not a downvoter and just speculated why. I think I could have worded the questoin much differently and it would have gotten upvotes. I do encourage that anyone who downvotes leave a message saying why. Constructive criticism will help the poster learn how to be a better member of the community.

Ha, you might have had better luck asking the question without the semi-creepy back story.

comment What options do I have for a normal and fast prime lens for a Canon APS-C camera?
Just don't get fooled into thinking that wider aperture means you will be able to shoot in low light. If you open the aperture more, you will get a shallower DOF. It only works if you want such a shallow DOF in low light... If you don't want a shallow DOF, you need to rely on your camera's ISO setting or use a flash.

comment How to cope with high contrast?
haha, do photographers really frown upon hdr? I really like hdr shots a lot. The reflection in the guitar in this hdr shot is really nice. Oh, and great answer! +1.
