comment Can the sun damage the camera sensor? Under what conditions?
Sorry for the late response, I wanted to answer with more than a gut-feeling so I wrote a program to generate statistics about my time-lapse projects. The results are a new (still unfinished) open-source program and the short answer is yes. Long answer: each project varied but I mostly shot with P or Aperture priority mode (Av). Shots with the sun in frame were generally 1/100s or faster/less, although there were some instances where the camera misjudged and would expose up to ~1 second with the sun in frame (thanks to the attached fish-eye).

Generally controlled via laptop using various software such as PSRemote and GBTimelapse, though sometimes using the CHDK firmware or for fast action sequences just a custom made clamp to just hold down the shutter button until the memory ran out. For most Powershot cameras, you can get a lens tube adapter for about 20USD/EUR which has 52mm front threading. Using a couple step-up rings I was able to fit a Raynox fish-eye.

comment Best 32GB SD card for GoPro's HD HERO2?
According to eyeofmine.com/gopro/hd/prof/index.html the highest rate for video is 720p @ 60fps which is 15.8mbps / 8 => ~2 MB/s. From my own tests with Hero2, time-lapse stills are anywhere between 2-6 MB each x 2 = ~4-12MB/s.

comment How can I force Lightroom to export metadata for all photos?
I'm pretty sure this is the same thing as right-clicking on the selected files -> Metadata -> Save Metadata to file. I am trying to reproduce the problem, but no matter which way I do it, XMP export seems to be working (for now).

Yes. I have even tried selecting just several photos or just one set of photos - all attempts were futile.

Thanks but if you re-read my question, I wrote that I already tried that to minimal avail i.e. about 1/10th of the XMP data actually was written out.

That link doesn't say anything and i can't find any info on their site. But i'll believe you... though i could swear i read other stats on one of Microsoft's pages at some point. shrug

FYI Live Sync is now Live Mesh and has totally different stats e.g. 25GB total, 50MB per file, etc.

comment Purple spots in my shots!
Good questions! Yes. Yes. No. No. I tried #3 with different lenses but I was unable to find anything. I then went back to my old lens and I couldn't reproduce the problem. I need to set aside some time for experimenting.

comment How many images can a Lightroom catalog really handle?
I'm sorry but Lightroom vs Picasa? Maybe for editing JPEGs but for RAWs forget about it!

Yes? Does that mean you have Win and Mac?

comment How many images can a Lightroom catalog really handle?
Thanks, but I already own it and I have actually tried a few times to do a full import but I never get past several hours before I need my computer for some other project. It's sad because the import consumes almost all available resources on my system (4x 3.4ghz, 6gb of ram) leaving almost nothing left for me to even run a Remote Desktop session to work - I'm guessing it will take around 24 hours.

Totally depends on the kids... or rather the parents ;) but that's a discussion for another SE forum ;)

Interesting. Are you on Windows or Mac? And what do you mean by "a long time to completely start" ? 30 seconds? 5 minutes?

comment What software is focused on reviewing and organizing images?
From the website: "...a perfect companion to existing Digital Asset Management suites such as Adobe Lightroom or IDImager, helping users perform their initial accept/reject selection and rating much faster than before. Put in another way, you'll be done with reviewing/culling/rating with FPV Pro before Lightroom finished importing all the files and crunching the previews."

comment How to determine when I've lost interest in photography?
Have to agree here totally. Over the years I have repeatedly gone through similar up-and-down rhythm (currently going through a down-phase) - but in the end I always come back with more passion and vigor than before. I make sure to keep my mind busy doing completely different creative projects so that when I do come back, I will hopefully have new ideas borrowed from the other arts.
