comment Better to buy an older high-level camera or newer entry-level camera?
"some in the UK offer a whole year's warranty on second hand cameras and lenses" Hopefully every retailer as this is mandatory for commercial sale of used goods.

comment First DSLR camera?
Anything in budget will work. Personally I would go for two things: Specific (exotic) features that mostly minor brands will have in that price range (e.g. sailing photography -> water resistant Pentax, major brands have that only in more expensive sets). If that is not relevant (and most of the time it isn't for your first DSLR) I would go for what people you know have so you could lend and try different lenses or flashes.

comment Can I use old Pentax lenses on newer Pentax DSLRs?
On the istDS the button for shutter speed suggestion is the AE-L button; and you get meter reading when stopping down.

The article specifically mentions different medium format chips that are larger than so-called "full frame" (a misnomer). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

comment What is the legal consensus on “pinning” photos using Pinterest?
Pinterest, tumblr and co are not link collections. They copy and republish the content. There is no fair use exception just for mass entertainmment. But these services operate as "user generated content" sites and are allowed to work so (under US law) if they take down content fast after being notified about legal complaints. Of course "finding something on the net" doesn't constitute an effort by the user so these take down notices are handled fast or the service would be shut down. Other ugc sites like Youtube use the same modus operandi.

A lot of startups work on the verge of illegality, a few far beyond. The thing is US civil law is quite bad for consuments in general, more so if you are outside the US. Suing a US user content service because of a criminal thing some user did who may well be outside the US himself is pointless, you need to pin the user who uploaded or ask the service to take down the user content. This works, all these services have fast DMCA takedown procedures that work. The situation is not nice, the users are criminals, the services benefit from this behaviour, but there is not much one can do.

comment Bayonet mount adapter
58mm sounds like a filter thread for me, not like a lens thread mount. You can't adapt a complete lens to this, just some auxiliary modifier lenses (e.g. 0.5x wide, 1.5x tele), except when you reverse-mount a manual lens for macro photography. A bridge camera is the wrong device for such experiments.

comment What, technically, is happening when one adjusts the 'Exposure' setting in a raw editor?
The answers should take into account this part of the question: "How does it differ to adjusting an image's brightness?" I am sure there was a question once that asked for this specific difference, maybe just link to that.

comment RAW files converted in TIFF files, using XNVIEW program
For my kind of RAW files (ORF) XnView is not a converter. It just reads the embedded processed JPEG. So in that set up it would have been pointless to shoot RAW in the first place, you would have lost every possible benefit of shooting RAW.

Thank you! I don't see how I can do exactly this with the Lab Adjustments but the HSV Equalizer is indeed the exact (and better) equivalent.

comment How can I make the text in this photograph of an ancient column more readable?
That is easier if you know what the goal is. Otherwise it is either a shot in the dark or a show-off of possibilities, capabilities, or knowledge. If that coincidentially helped it is the most inefficient way to do so.

What result do you need? Legible text is easy by loading it into an image editor and cranking up the contrast a lot. Black-on-white lettering is a different thing, and there is a lot possible in between.

You never change the focal length? At what length do you use the 18-55?
