I'm a Microsoft Software Development Engineer on the Trustworthy Computing Team. I've worked at several security related places previously, including Malware Bytes and PreEmptive Solutions.

On StackOverflow I mostly answer related questions, though I occasionally forray into and a couple of others.

I am the author of pevFind, a component of the ComboFix malware removal tool, and volunteer at BleepingComputer.com as a malware response instructor. My Twitter account is @MalwareMinigun.

comment Why is aspheric glass expensive?
@mattdm: That article is the best answer I've seen yet.

comment Why is aspheric glass expensive?
@dpollitt: I saw and responded to that comment in that question. That doesn't make sense -- paraboloids and hyperboloids can be ground using simple circular motions too, because they're still symmetric with respect to the center axis of the lens. (Hence my confusion)

comment Why is aspheric glass expensive?
Putting the glass on a lathe-like device though is sufficient -- it's not like aspheric designs are asymmetric with respect to the center axis. Sure, you could get a "round" pot by hand, but perfectly spherical? Even spherical elements are ground to much much much higher levels of precision than are possible by hand.

comment How does a spherical lens differ from an aspherical lens?
Erm, why can't they be ground by a natural rotary motion? Aspheric lens elements are still symmetric across the center axis; so any technique that works for spheres should work for paraboloids as well.
