I'm a student of CS/part time-developer and hobby-photographer since I was 8 or 9 and my dad gave me a 6x6-box (120-film) and shortly afterwards a Lomo (that was before it became ... infamous) plus complete works for BW-development.

I try to not care too much about the technical aspects of photography, being a geek, and learn more about taking great photos.

I face post-processing with a kind of mixed feelings, as I experienced early that it can't save a bad picture. Nevertheless Hugin is one of my pets up to the extent that I built it by myself several times on Windows, although slowly the fun of panorama- and semi-HDR-stitches fades.

comment What's the best lens for shooting baby and kids with a DX Nikon?
I second the Tamron 17-50mm. Had a very good first year with my kid and others (baby swimming) with it indoors.

comment Which postcard mailing services are the best?
Only as another model: we do it the manual way. There is a fast-printing service/machines in nearly every modern city or vacation spot. We just print the pictures we selected, add a stamp and some personalized scribbles and send the newly-made postcards on their way ... (some places like the Canary Islands only offer 24h-service though ;) ).

comment What free software exists for geotagging photos?
@Conor Boyd: No, it does not, that is true. That is also why Cygwin/Perl are not mentioned in the requirements in the brackets for Geosetter ;)

comment Why does fungus form in lenses, and how to get rid of it?
Maybe helpful: What are the best methods for cleaning really dirty lens elements?

comment What free software exists for geotagging photos?
Yes, I'm using both worlds. Never could get away from Visual Studio and games but I prefer a nice xterm for stringing (for example exiftool-)commands together. So ... there is CygWin for me :)

comment Is it acceptable in professional photography to accept a meal from the client during a paid event?
Anecdotal (Germany): our professional wedding photographer was hired for another wedding we attended and was seated among the guests during speech/meal/coffee. We chatted nicely and he glided away whenever he was needed. I think it was better than him lingering around like a ghost :)

comment How safe is CHDK?
@ysap Admittedly, damaging a shutter with long exposure seems to be difficult. I'd replace: s/shutter/shutter or sensor/g. (BTW: not all compacts have an electronic shutter only, my Canon A610 has a mechanical shutter (too?).)

Examples: You can specify extreme short/long exposures that can damage the shutter. You also can specify apertures excluded by original firmware that can damage the camera. Summary: Just apply common sense before you use CHDK ;)
