comment Timelapse with shutter release
I don't see how you can use the same technique for day time lapses while reducing the number of photos. Using an intervalometer is what allows you to control how often and the interval of the shutter release and thus the number of photos and overall size. Shooting continuous would be like shooting a video with a very slow frame rate I imagine. If you are going to do a quality time lapse during the day, you need an intervalometer for your camera model. You can also look at TriggerTrap which is a smartphone app and cable intervalometer.
