I'm an enthusiast amateur photographer from the Netherlands. My main two interests in photography are urban exploration and portrait/model shoots. I used to do same basic astrophotography in the past.

@asalamon74 +1 good point!

comment What are ED elements?
This animation by Canon shows it rather nicely: canon.com/camera-museum/tech/room/hotaru.html. Fluorite is known for it's best dispersion characteristics and is therefore used in UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements in lenses and telescopes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorite.

comment What is the best way to micro-adjust a lens?
@mattdm I realize now that is very vague indeed, I'll edit the answer. I won't post the exact content from the pdf though since I'd need permission from the author for that.

comment How does one focus for landscape photos in very dark conditions?
Be aware of temperature changes, these can affect the focus point.

Your first suggestion would work as long as the temperature doesn't change too much between focussing time and shooting time. I like the suggestion about the laser pointer!

+1 Great suggestion, I use these as well. GIMP takes some getting used to though. But is has superb capabilities (similar to Photoshop).

comment Cameras using mirrors instead of lenses?
Positive points for mirror lenses are reduced weight and length. This Samyang 800mm lens is only 114mm long: samyang.pl/product,144,category,5,samyang_800mm_mc_if_f8_mirror

comment How can I reduce the noise present when taking pictures without lowering my ISO?
@Dave Yes that is correct. Although the technique could be used for any low-light environment with non-moving objects.

comment Can you recommend a long cross body strap?
Good question. I always get annoyed with the normal strap when I use the camera in portrait orientation and the strap gets in my face :S.

comment Are Sigma lenses comparable to Canon lenses for a Canon camera?
I'm also very happy with my Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro. Sharpness is very good. The only downside is the build quality, the zoomring is getting quite sloppy.

+1 This product looks really useful! Great tip!

comment What are pros and cons of different quick release systems?
@Sam: you need to be careful and see if the existing plates fit on the new ball head. As long as you stick with one brand you'll be quite safe.

The averaging technique is widely used in the astrophotography field. Photographers take dozens (some even hunderds) of pictures and average them using varying techniques. They often shoot dark frames and flat frames to minimize various sources of noise: ccdastrophotography.com/article.php?id=2.

@Justin & Danny: The electrical leakage in sensors (that cause hot pixels) doubles for every 8 deg C increase in temperature (source: books.google.com/…). However you will only notice this when you use very high ISO settings or very long exposure times.

comment how to calibrate my monitor to match the 18% gray tone?
Indeed, use one of the monitor calibration tools available. I've got a DataColor Spider and calibrate my monitor every month. It takes about 5 min and you're done.
