I'm a software developer (currently focused on Python), living in Australia (currently focused on Sydney).

I am an on-again/off-again moderator of Skeptics.SE. (I was Pro Tem Moderator, I handed in my diamond when the first elections were held, and then ran in the second elections about a year later.)

I ordered a cheap knock-off to the Canon ACK-E2 when I saw the first responses. Arrived before my photo-shoot, and once all the plugs and cables where duct-taped together to stop them falling out, it solved the problem perfectly.

comment What does the Custom White-Balance *icon* represent?
I have accepted this as the answer, because it strikes me as the most plausible. However, I don't know if it is correct. Thanks André.

Interesting idea, Sebastien. Thank you. I can see the triangles in the caliper cursors, but they are oriented differently in the icon. If a graphic designer wanted to represent calipers, I am not sure they would end up with that icon.

Very useful to know. Thank you. I have updated the question appropriately.

Thanks Matt. I did wonder if the icon represented the controls on some old piece of equipment (enlarger for colour negatives?) That was one reason for posting it here: I think there are enough people with an interest in historical photography equipment to recognise it.

comment What does the Custom White-Balance *icon* represent?
Thanks AJ. I did wonder if it was supposed to be a poor rendering of a face, but the other answers suggest not, because it is square on some brands.

do you have any specs or references for what the Canon, or any DSLR, needs? I would have thought 0.5A @ 5V would be enough to drive the mirror and sensor - maybe not the built-in flash. Maybe I haven't got a good feel for it though.
