comment When to expose for the shadows vs expose for the highlights?
The Canon shadows get excessive chroma noise when pushed while Nikon remained free of chroma noise all the way to +5EV if shot at 100 ISO yet is 5EV underexposed. So, with Sony/Nikon sensors, you would be much better off exposing for highlights and not worry about shadow details or underexpose it manually. Can't be said the same for Canon. I have Canon T4i and Nikon D5500 and I have the exact same effects as shown above.

comment Why do my photos show blocky gradients, even in RAW?
I was noticing the same issue and wondered the same thing - I thought, "It looks awfully like JPG artifacts - I can see blocks that are consistent with JPG compression" when I magnified by 400% even though I was using only RAW files. Thanks!
