revised Which lens is sharper? The Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 or the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8?
Removed sample images, because they weren't taken with a tripod.

@D. Lambert - I own it, very happy with it. The IQ isn't as good as the 17-50 f/2.8 but you can't beat the versatility. I used it as a primary lens on a 4 week holiday, and was very happy with it. It is a little slow, so it works best when there's plenty of light (thought the 7D has better ISO than my 405D). Also the zoom mechanism is a bit loose, except in the middle where it's tight. You do need to use the zoom lock to stop it sliding out. @jrista thought it was strange that my answer was downvoted without reason.

Not sure there even is a 17-70 2.8. The sigma is 2.8-3.5. To get 2.8 you'd have to go 17-50 (Tamron/Sigma) or 17-55 (Canon)

comment For greater telephoto range, should I use 70-200mm + teleconverter or a longer zoom lens?
Exactly. A stop is the square root of 2 = 1.4

comment Canon 5D Mark II vs NIkon D3x for studio/wedding work?
And the 5D mk II would be compared to the Nikon D700 - the 300s isn't full frame.

comment Is there a way to synchronise JPEG metadata into RAW files in Lightroom?
Now that Lightroom has native Facebook upload, I don't use Windows Live Gallery anymore
