Thank you, that is very clear! That also explains why I did the test myself and couldn't see much difference between infinity and closer focus (I am not using a macro lens). The numerical example was very useful too!

Thanks. In other words you are saying that no matter at what distance you are working at, a lens will collect the same amount of light when set to a certain f-number. I then wonder why the concept of effective f-number has been introduced.

I was under the impression that the f-number was defined as the ratio of focal length and aperture, and that the entrance pupil was just the apparent size of the aperture. I tend not to necessary trust wikipedia. Here for example (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture) the f-number is specified as a ratio of "focal length to effective aperture diameter".
