I don't have any sources, so I don't want to submit this as an answer, but you should be careful. Improperly charging batteries can lead to fire or explosion in some cases. I don't know if this is that extreme, but I wouldn't do it.

@MichaelClark, does the 50d fit in the same category as those other entry-level DSLRs? I understand that it uses different materials in the build, which I can see as having an impact on temperature tolerance.

Remember that these lenses won't be able to take advantage of auto-focus or auto-exposure. Not that this can't be a good deal, I use an adapted lens myself.
