I'm a senior developer for FEi Systems. I blog here: http://scottlaw.knot.org/blog/ on technology and my other interests.

In addition to software developer, I've been an analyst, project manager, DBA, and team lead for previous employers.

I studied computer science (undergrad) and business (MBA) at the University of Maryland-College Park.

comment What DSLR should I buy?
I was speaking more specifically about main mode dial (the bottom photo on the link you sent). I have a Canon S90, and it's got the same main mode dial as the Canon EOS Rebel. Because the original questioner has been shooting the SI5S in manual mode the vast majority of the time, I think she's right in expecting the transition to DSLR to be "relatively painless". Control wheels for shutter speed and aperture on a Canon DSLR will surface controls that are probably buried under some menus on her current camera.

For more on that third option, search on the term "camera traps" in Google. It looks like they tend to be used for wild animal photography (worldwildlife.org/species/camera-traps/moreoncameratraps.html).

comment How can I get my portrait subjects to look natural and drop the cheesy smile?
Conversation with whoever you're making the photo of is key. Even if it's corny jokes, once you get a genuine smile, shots worth keeping are usually the result.

comment How can I backup my RAW photos while travelling without Internet access?
The original questioner asked for a 100% offline solution, so Live Sync is probably out.

comment What kind of photography is still better done with film cameras?
I don't see this question as a duplicate. The prior question is a quality question, while this one is about types of photography. I think the answers to this question reflect the differences pretty well.

You're definitely thinking of the right lens range for this.
