comment How do they come up with focal lengths for lenses?
For the record they do have odd focal lengths coming out, the Zeiss 55mm comes to mind but in any reference to it Zeiss seems to want to call it a 50mm.

comment Is it normal to have tiny black dust spots in the viewfinder of a DSLR?
As a short term measure you can use spot removal, cloning to fix it in post.

comment Why do Canon EF and EF-S lenses exhibit the same crop factor?
LightRoom will report based on EXIF information that the lens was able to provide to the camera when taking the shot. In this case the lens reported focal length of 70mm. Usually (my observation) it has not been the case that the software would factor in the sensor size when reporting the focal length that was used to take the picture.

comment Why aren't lenses designed with extra large apertures for autofocus beyond what's used for imaging?
@ChinmayKanchi I don't see a reason why this is being voted for a close, a good question that I've always wondered. I'm for up voting this. What matt said was valid fixing abberation isn't the only factor in designing a lens. It's a fine balancing act between needs, wish list, costs, complexity, trade offs and time to market.

@feklee I'm not sure that google lets you use your own photos for panos. Nothing in the API says that, it's more like how you can take Google Street View data and assemble them on your own.

comment Are images taken with newer DSLRs sharper than those taken with old ones?
@ChinmayKanchi I saw this picture which was taken with a 40D and a CZ 50mm 1.4 . It looks pretty decent (yeah I know not the same body) and I suppose it will make a decent reference for further discussion :D.

@ChinmayKanchi are you able to post sample pics on flickr or some other site to have a look at ?

Soft and mushy doesn't sound like OOF, seems like in general the picture is reasonably viewable but lacks details and clarity in certain areas.

comment Is GPU or CPU more important for Photoshop and Lightroom?
Interesting question. There's a little piece on Tom's Hardware that asks the same question as you do. They conclude that it does benefit you if you do a lot of editing with the supported operation. As a bonus there's the benchmark results you can have a look at. You'll notice that integrated GPU's can perform well. Just keep in mind that when it comes to Intel GPU's, they're not built to provide exceptional performance, just enough for the job.
