comment What are the differences between the Canon extenders?
Jon: Thanks for info and link, this combination looks like something to aim for. The one draw back that might put my wife off a bit is the weight, although she has got used to the weight of the 7D and the 100/400 an extra 2 pounds sounds allot. I will add a couple of pounds to her existing combination, somehow, and see how it feels to her. Thanks again

Hi Jrista, I have studied the answers and I think I will have to spend lots of money to improve on what my wife has. I will start saving. Thanks for your invaluable information.

comment What are the differences between the Canon extenders?
I would like to leave the question as it is, as I presume there may also be problems with the 1.4x as well as the 2x and the original question may answer this as the suggested one does not.if thats ok dpollitt?

comment Are there any downsides in using 2x extenders?
I am willing to pay a Canon price or more for a good 2x Extender compatible with a 7D and 100-400 IS lens, is there such a thing, if so what is it please?

comment Sigma 150-500 f/5-6.3 vs Sigma 50-500 f/4-6.3 for birds in flight?
Hi Chuqui, Thanks for your comments. I bought Di the 100-400 she loves it. Not too heavy and she is taking some good photos. I am told that with converters you loose some of the positives of a lens. I presume that with the combination you are using, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The gain you get by a 300 x 1.4 against the 400 appears mathematically minimal. Are you finding other benefits?

comment Is the IS of the Canon EF 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS USM Telephoto Zoom worth the extra £200 over the Canon EF 400 f/5.6 L USM Lens?
Hi chuqui. I got Di the 100-400 as an early Christmas present, so far the results have been great. Unfortunately her 7D has developed a fault and is in for repair. Some of her work is on Redbubble (dilouise) although the majority with the previous lenses the latest ones with the 100-400. There is an improvement in clarity at the longer distances.

comment What size lens is recommended for flying bird photography?
I chose the 100-400 after good advice from this site, thanks jrista et al. Di's photos are even better, have a look at dilouise on Redbubble, however, only the last few photos will be with the new lens and the new camera. Her 7D is at the doctors at present, but should be out of hospital in a few weeks.

I have purchased the 7D for my wife. The results are very encouraging, it is a very good camera, thanks jrista for the recommendation. My next task is to purchase the 100-400 lens.

Thanks jrista, unfortunatly the 500 and the 600 are well out of my price range. Can you use the 1.4 extender with the 400 and the 100-400?
