comment Cons of using a manual flash on-camera as well?
Thanks Imre - this covers both the comparisons that are relevant, and helps me get to a more informed decision for my specific use. From what I now understand, it would be good for me to have an Advanced flash which can be used on-camera. Later, I can always add a manual off-camera for studio type stuff (unlikely I will do that much) a d use the advanced flash to trigger it, if required. (There is always other mechanisms to trigger manual flashes anyway).

comment Is there a Canon equivalent of the Nikon D3100? If so, what is it?
I doubt that I will be spending anything more than 300-400$ max on any lens, so the L series is out of my reach. In parallel, I started looking at the Pentax k-x and related ecosystem. I like the price (for 100$ less than 550D, I get a 500D equiv body with IS + 2 lenses !). However the ecosystem and community is not available here in India/Asia, so it is a big risk which I'm debating, whether to take or not :) So 500D v/s Pentax k-x it is, as of now. Will decide by next couple of days and close this.

Thanks for the detailed explanation regarding diffractions. Have been reading for around a month now, but never came across this aspect.

@labnut : I am not looking for a spirited debate, am looking for some quality insights, which I think this forum delivers at a very high S/N ratio :)

Probably not, in the short-mid term. I will have my hands full with the stills themselves !

I am new to DSLRs (but have used Canon S3 IS in manual mode extensively). Hence, I'm not even sure how much of serious video I will shoot. So your comment on 500D being good enough makes sense. Also, very true regarding the pricing of various models by firms :)

comment Does the Nikon D3100 have audio input?
@Evan : But the now "entry-level" "video dslr" from canon, the T2I (550D) does have external input, apart from a stereo internal mic. Guess it will make its way into a nikon entry level model soon.

comment Expected Discounts and Price reductions during Thanksgiving - Christmas?
Actually this question is no different than a few others on photo.se (for example, "should I upgrade from EOSxx to EOSx or wait) etc. But I get it. Perception about the question matters :)

As mentioned in the question, I was looking for US (and Singapore) prices.

@Rob : More than 90% of the questions regarding photography are subjective :)

comment What portrait posing rules do you recommend for studio photography?
Too subjective and generic. You might want to make this a community-wiki.

comment How do I choose a macro lens for a Canon APS-C camera?
Hamish - theoretically, what is the difference between a 100mm (say) EF lens, and a 100 mm EF-S lens, when used on an APS-C camera ? Reason for asking is that some EF lenses seem to be much cheaper.

comment What (important) controls are missing from EOS 1000D (w.r.t 5xxD)
Thanks, I have checked the comparisons here as well as on other sites. The points you mention above are all already considered into the decision (you get what you pay for :) ) I was looking for more feedback from people who have used the cameras first hand, and can compare.

comment Are Canon EOS and Nikon DSLR lenses interchangeable?
+1 for the nice link. But Tamron, Sigma lenses are specific mounts, which are not interchangable once ordered, no ?

Thanks for the explanation, I think I will stick with a Canon System :)
