Did/will you get the parts off ebay? The selector dial has died as well. We are looking for a new camera as she doesnt use it all that much, but I will stay away from Canon, I have no confidence in the build quality. We have an old pentax (originally around the same price) from 2003 that still going strong and a DSLR from Nikon (albeit a higher level camera (D80)) that took a few knocks and has been replaced for a new full frame. Still works well.

comment Is under/over exposing using shutter speed or aperture the same as using exposure compensation?
Nikon models: i have experienced that changing the +-EV value in Manual mode does nothing. You can over/under expose only by using Aperture/Shutter or ISO controls.....

thanks for the info. My big beef is that if it is not designed to be cleaned at least make it a sealed unit so dust or other particles dont get in. Really is my fault as i was warned about the lack of quality in canon builds.

comment What level of zoom lens comes with a new Canon EOS 1100D?
FORGET ZOOM factors. There is an old saying. If your photo isnt good enough you are not close enough. Concentrate on focal lengths. You dont want to upgrade to a better camera by using it the same way as your P&S. Look at your current photos, see what you like taking pictures of and buy your kit with that in mind. In the end focal length and perspective are important not how much you can zoom. (PS: Same goes for mega pixels)

They said dust particles, but that was just a cursory glance.

A great image has impact and those can be taken with pretty much any semi-capable camera. A good quality image requires a good camera and good lens to match. This is a very precise and pertinent, and puts things in perpesctive.

Thanks for the permission ;). I hope i am not in the category of 'new and cool'. Admittedly I am a tech head adjusted for income level, look but dont touch. This for me is the battle of why I want to upgrade, for upgrade sake or for a real reason. This post has helped significantly in that i have been asked to answer questions (which everyone should ask themselves before each significant purchase) to myself in order to know why I want this upgrade. To be clearer in purpose.
